Dorothy Duncan has always had a passion for design and renovation. She graduated from the University of Houston and began to work as an elementary school teacher before following her passion for design and construction. Her first project was a home that was given to her by her grandmother her Sr. year in high school as a graduation gift. It was scheduled to be demolished but she managed to save the house, renovated it and it eventually became her first home. She worked with a family member who had extensive knowledge of construction and from there, she began to network and learn the real estate renovation and restoration business. She established her own company, Dorothy’s Design Studio, and began self-promoting her business to local homeowners and small businesses.
She also began venturing into other real estate investment and acquisition projects. In 2009, Dorothy’s company was hired to renovate the Greater St. Mary Baptist Church baptismal fountain and restrooms, in Tyler, TX. This was Dorothy’s first commercial construction project. Word of her impeccable work and attention to detail spread and more jobs followed. She was solicited to work on 10,000 sq. ft. of new construction residential homes in Frisco, TX and was also contracted to remodel and residential home in the historic Azalea District of Tyler, TX. In 2010, Dorothy began to expand her company and began developing and restoring commercial properties, including the East Texas Justice Center and the City of Tyler Neighborhood Services Rebuild Project.
